REFLECTION:

Reflection for 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Who is the family of Jesus?
Jesus seems here to disown his family. Does he dismiss Mary and his family? He knew that he was not going down well with the family, and maybe wanted some distance from them. It is interesting that they came for him, maybe to take him home.
But he turns the family table. He expands his notion of the family. Coming from God his father he proclaims that all around him are family to him – these are his mother, brother and sister. He will later teach them to pray, not My Father, but Our Father.
This is one of the central teachings of Jesus, that we are all brothers and sisters, because of our Father in heaven. From this truth that Jesus felt so strongly came much of his preaching – to retreat each other as family at its best would.
This follows on from the debate about good and bad religion of earlier weeks. The best of religion treats us all as brothers and sisters because of God. Our first and last belonging is that we belong to God – we come from God and go to God.
There will often be conflict in Jesus’ family about him. His first family did not take easily to his new family – his disciples. Only at Pentecost around the mother of Jesus would both families unite.
His words are words to us today – he looks around at us and sees us as his brothers and sisters. This will make a difference as to how we see each other.
Think of different people and say within yourself,
‘you are my brother, you are my sister’.
Make me, Lord, an instrument of peace and of joy among your people.
Donal Neary SJ

Diocesan Pilgrim Walk – 16th June | Diocese of Waterford & Lismore (waterfordlismore.ie)

LIGHT OF HOPE DIOCESAN MISSION 2024

We are delighted to announce plans for our Diocesan Mission this June!

A group of 23 Canadian Missionaries from Catholic Christian Outreach™ (CCO™) will arrive in the diocese on 11th June following a week-long Parish Mission in the Diocese of Raphoe. They will help to facilitate a mission here in the diocese from 12th – 16th June.
Their mission, which is aimed at all age groups, will include activities such as meeting & greeting parishioners after morning Masses, Lightfever, Street Outreach, Encounter event for Young Adults, Music, Prayer and Testimony.
They will also facilitate three training sessions for all who are involved throughout the diocese in any area of ministry in our parishes and who would like to grow in confidence in their faith and in their ability to intentionally share with others, and create an invitational culture in our parishes. We would hope to see those who are involved, for example, in any aspect of Parish Liturgy, in Parish Pastoral Councils or Leadership Teams, Alpha Teams, Parish Faith Reps, Legion of Mary, and so on, attend a training event as a way of growing in our confidence and skills in knowing and sharing our faith.
The highlight of the mission will be a special diocesan afternoon of celebration at Mount Melleray on Sunday 16th June, with prayer at the Abbey, Pilgrim Walks, time for personal prayer and reflection, as well as fellowship and chat.

Students Prayer

Lord, I ask you to help me at this stressful time. I feel that so much depends on these exams that I really feel burdened. I feel that in addition to carrying my own burdens, I am carrying the expectations of so many others – family, friends, and society. Help me to keep calm at this time, so that I can think straight and apply myself to the best of my ability. Let your spirit help and inspire me, so that I can remember all that I have studied and put together my answers in the best way. Guide me in all my ways, so that I may be fulfilled in you. Amen.
